More Dominion production reports

Dominion has significant interests in two of the world’s highest rock value diamond mines – Ekati and Diavik - located in Canada’s North West Territories approximately 300 kilometres north east of Yellowknife and approximately 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. Together, these mines provide Dominion with a steady and reliable supply of rough diamonds that are highly prized in the world’s markets for their size, shape, color and clarity.

Dominion operates the Ekati Diamond Mine in which it has a controlling interest. The Ekati Diamond Mine (named after the Tlicho word meaning ‘fat lake’) is Canada’s first surface and underground diamond mine. It officially began production in October 1998, following extensive exploration and development work dating back to 1981.

Dominion owns 40% of the Diavik Diamond Mine, Canada’s largest diamond mine in terms of carat production. Dominion pays 40 per cent of the mine’s operating and capital costs while receiving 40 per cent of the mine’s diamond output. The mine is operated by Dominion’s JV partner, Rio Tinto.

Exploration and Development

Dominion has significant exploration potential on its existing land package. Four development projects are currently underway. At Ekati, the Lynx pipe is expected to begin production at the end of January 2017.  The Sable Pipe construction is underway with mining expected to start in 2018. The Jay project was approved for construction in July 2016 and is the most significant undeveloped deposit at Ekati due to its large size and high grade and extends the mine life by approximately 10 years beyond the current projected closure in 2023 to 2033; Mining and processing of Jay kimberlite is expected by late 2022. At Diavik, a fourth pipe – the A21 pipe - is being developed with mining operations scheduled to begin in 2018.

Diamond Sales and Marketing

Dominion Diamond Corporation sorts and values its rough diamonds at its own facilities and then sells them directly to manufacturers for cutting and polishing through its sales offices in the world’s major diamond centres, in Belgium and India. Dominion Diamond Corporation’s diamond market experts sell rough diamonds directly to manufacturers (who cut and polish diamonds), tailoring parcels to the customer’s needs. This minimizes the variation of stones in each parcel and generates a premium for the Company over prices charged by suppliers offering more variable parcels.
